If it was the US, Tom would have also been getting directing credits for some shows (which has happened many times in US productions). But I think because of strict union rules, he couldn't be the actor and director.

His complacency here is grating and the fact people say Toms entire era is gold is utter insanity. His first three seasons certainly were superb, before the arrogance and boredom set in. How anyone can watch seasons 16 and 17 is baffling to me - there are more genuinely dramatic scenes in 'Rentaghost'.

I believe he knew what the Doctor would say and do, because he became the Doctor when he had those clothes on.. so it makes sense that if a script came over, he would recognize something that needed to be changed.

Tom loved the Doctor, and he wanted Doctor Who to shine. He held people up to a standard. Sure, he wasn't always right, but I imagine he was most of the time.
